September 2024 – Vexatious Litigants & Divorcing a Narcissist

Did You Know?

The Court may designate a pro se (not represented by an attorney) litigant as a vexatious litigant, therefore prohibiting their ability to initiate additional lawsuits.

What is a vexatious litigant? A vexatious litigant is someone who brings a lawsuit or files motions with the intent to harass or cause legal expenses for their opponent. It may take the form of a primary frivolous lawsuit or may be the repetitive, burdensome, and unwarranted filings of meritless motions in a matter. Filing vexatious litigation is considered an abuse of the judicial process and may result in sanctions against the offender.

A vexatious litigant is prohibited from filing certain documents without permission of the court. Orders that designate a litigant as a vexatious litigant are posted on the Judicial Branch website.

Am I Married To a Narcissist?

A narcissist is someone who has an inflated sense of self-importance and a need for admiration, who may also lack empathy for others. How do you know if you're married to a narcissist? Below are some common signs to help you spot narcissistic behavior.

  1. Your partner has a sense of self-importance and superiority. They may exaggerate or lie about their achievements and talents, expecting praise and to be recognized as superior.
  2. Your partner lacks empathy. Narcissists may be unwilling or unable to understand the needs, feelings, or desires of others. This can make it difficult for them to take responsibility for their actions.
  3. Your partner's hunger for success and power is often insatiable to them. They often fantasize about work-related accomplishments and being intellectually brilliant.
  4. Your partner requires excessive admiration and recognition. A narcissist seeks attention not only from their partner but from others as well. They may even devalue you if you don't give them the admiration they are looking for.
  5. Your partner has difficulty handling criticism. Narcissists may become defensive or aggressive when faced with feedback.
  6. Your partner has a sense of entitlement and believe they deserve special treatment. Narcissists have unreasonably high expectations for how they should be treated.
  7. Your partner displays arrogant behaviors and attitudes.
