Child Support Lawyer in Scottsdale
How is child support determined in Arizona?
Child support refers to court-ordered payments that are typically made by the parent who does not have physical and / or legal custody of his or her child to support the minor child or children. In Arizona, state child support guidelines are followed by the court. Without an agreement of the parties or extraordinary circumstances, the child support amount determined by the child support guidelines is what a parent will pay.
The entry of a child support order does not happen automatically. The parent with physical custody can ask the court for a hearing to order child support. The parties and their lawyers are responsible for moving a case through the court, and our firm can help you ensure that the process is completed satisfactorily.

When Child Support Starts
Typically, child support will be ordered to begin on the first day of the month following service of process. Service of process means that a parent has filed papers with the court and served them on the other parent. At some point, child support will be ordered to begin back to the first day of the month following the date that the other parent was served. In some cases, certain circumstances may cause child support to start on another date, but generally, it is established in the manner described above.

Once a child support order is entered, it will remain in effect until a parent files to modify it or the child becomes emancipated. If you are considering a child support modification to ask for an increase in child support or to pay less child support, specific requirements must be met.
In order for the court to grant your request, the resulting child support amount in the new calculation must be a 15% or greater change from the old amount, which means that you must have either a 15% increase or a 15% decrease from what is currently ordered. Our firm’s child support attorneys in Scottsdale can help you through the process of evaluating your child support needs, so call us at once.
