Traveling Within the United States By Air Will Require A New ID In 2020

Take care of it now, don’t wait!

As fast as 2018 went, we should all realize this is just around the corner!

Starting in October of 2020, Arizona Driver’s Licenses will NO LONGER be accepted as an acceptable form of identification to travel by plane.

Although for some of you this policy change may seem distant, you don’t want to be the one who books the family vacation to Disneyworld only to find out you can’t get on the plane!

Travelers will still be allowed to use the valid identifications below, but a normal Arizona driver’s license will not work.

  • U.S. passport or passport card
  • DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
  • U.S. Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependents
  • Permanent resident card or Border crossing card
  • DHS-designated enhanced driver’s license
  • Federally recognized, tribal-issued photo ID
  • HSPD-12 PIV card
  • Foreign government-issued passport
  • Canadian provincial driver’s license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card
  • Transportation worker identification credential
  • U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766)
  • U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential

Please note that the rules for international travel remains unchanged, you will still need a valid passport to travel outside of the United States.

If the MVD lines seem too long, there are also many authorized third party service providers for the Motor Vehicle Division throughout the Valley, many of which are open on Saturdays. The Arizona Travel ID is the credential that complies with the federal REAL ID act of 2005. It is both a driver license and an identification card. A gold star is embedded in the card to show the cardholder has provided added proof of identification to ensure the license or ID meets strict federal requirements.

Everyone has travel “horror stories”, don’t let this policy change add a story to your repertoire.
