There are border patrol checkpoints located near Yuma and Wellton, Arizona on Interstate 8 (I-8). Vehicles stopped at these border patrol checkpoints are asked for proof of citizenship and a drug detecting dog is moved around the car to check for the presence of both drugs and illegal aliens. If a dog alerts on your car, you will be pulled into the secondary inspection station, where they will ask to search your car with a drug dog (or K-9 unit).

If you are charged with possession of marijuana, methamphetamines, cocaine, or heroin, you may be arrested on felony drug charges and taken to the Yuma County Detention Center. If the officer finds a small amount (less than ½ gram) of marijuana, Arizona marijuana law states they may issue you a citation requiring you to appear in either the Yuma or Wellton justice court.
